Other highlights for the band include performing at the FREEZE Festival in Holland, goMOSCOW Festival in Russia, receiving a finalist place in the UK Songwriting Contest, Radio 2 airplay and being invited to play live on Janice Long’s Radio 2 show. THE SIDE have also performed at prevous goNORTH, ROCKNESS, LOOPALLU & BELLADRUM Festivals as well as being selected for NME / LEE Unsigned & The Red Stripe Music Awards. He quit his adopted home in Detroit (to the locals’ general relief), settled across the Atlantic in Brussels (to the locals’ general consternation) and awaited the arrival of another similarly auspicious year, one with enough arbitrary numerical significance to allow him to resume his recording career in quasi-masonic style. So it was that in 2010, aided by a new gang of conspirators-- among them Blaine L. Reininger and Luc van Lieshout, both poached from the legendary avant-sleaze collective Tuxedomoon--, the Dove began work on a spare, crepuscular set earmarked for 10" vinyl. During this time Michel produced he's first single "Want ya Back" and a year later an Album came out. But Michel saw himself more as a dj like an producer because hanging around in studios was not his world yet, to thrill his audience to manipulate them with any style of music was essential for him. On 1992 Michel came back to Luxemburg were he start to work as resident at the number one Club in town "Casablanca". His impeccable record choice and excellent mixing assure him an Award from Nightlife report for best dj 1995 in the Grand-Duchy,and in the upcoming years he worked together whit he's long friend Marino Berardi at the well knowend Outland Records shop in Luxemburg. Ähnlich wie Charlie Mingus, der nach einer Trennung in Mexiko die Sau raus ließ, um später mit "Tijuana Moods" eins seiner besten Alben aufzunehmen, ging es Marianne Dissard, nachdem ihre Ehe mit dem Chansonnier Naïm Amor in die Brüche ging. Doch statt schnell nach Mexiko rüberzumachen, was von ihrer Wahlheimat Tucson aus ein kleiner Tagesausflug wäre, ging sie auf eine fast endlose Tournee, durch Deutschland, Frankreich; Italien, USA, Neuseeland und Australien. Und schrieb "L'abandon", ihr neues Album. Und auch wenn es sich um ein vollkommen anderes Genre handelt, ist die Energie und die Wildheit, die "L'abandon" entfaltet, eine ähnliche wie bei den meisterhaften "Tijuana Moods". Der Titel "L'abandon" gibt die Richtung vor: Er bedeutet soviel wie "Abkehr" und Marianne Dissard versteht ihn programmatisch. Der romantische Unterton des Vorgängeralbums "L'entredeux" ist wilder Entschlossenheit und Konfrontation gewichen. War "L'entredeux" noch geprägt von Joey Burns, der mit Dissards Hilfe seine musikalischen Vision vom französischen Chanson auslebte, ist es heute Marianne Dissard, die als Produzentin ein authentisches Bild von sich selbst erschafft. Es ist das Bild einer gebürtigen Französin, die längst in den USA ihre Heimat gefunden hat. Genauer gesagt in Tucson, Arizona. Aber es ist auch die Abkehr von einem Mann und die musikalische Verarbeitung einer Trennung. "L'entredeux" beschrieb einen Zwischenzustand, "L'abandon" eine Abkehr, die gleichzeitig ein dynamischer Neuanfang ist. Dabei vertraut Dissard nach wie vor auf die einzigartige Verbindung von französischer Poesie und US-amerikanischem Independent-Rock, auf das, was sie als Desert Chanson kreiert hat. Es gibt also durchaus Anknüpfungspunkte zwischen beiden Alben. Nur dass der Wüstenwind jetzt rauer weht und Marianne Dissard diesmal selbst die Produzenten-Rolle einnimmt: "Mein erstes Album wurde produziert vom Tucsonian Joey Burns, der wohl versuchte, ein "französisches" Album zu schreiben. Dieses Album dagegen ist unter der Regie zweier Europäer entstanden, die ihrer Faszination von Tucson und dem amerikanischen Westen Ausdruck geben." Der zweite Europäer ist der Komponist und Ennio-Morricone-Schüler Christian Ravaglioli, den Marianne Dissard über Howe Gelb kennenlernte. Ravaglioli schrieb die Musik zu zehn der elf neuen Songs. Nach ihrer ersten Begegnung schrieb der Italiener über Nacht die Musik zu "Le jour d'anniversaire". Gleich war für Marianne Dissard klar, dass sie einen neuen Songschreiber gefunden hatte. Im Unterschied zu "L'entredeux" schrieb sie die Texte parallel zum Kompositionsprozess in Ravigliolis Studio in Italien - auch deswegen wirken die Songs so unmittelbar und direkt. "Anders als bei meinem ersten Album sind Musik und Text hier parallel entstanden, in der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Christian und mir. Da wir keine gemeinsame Sprache sprechen, kommunizierten wir während der Demosessions einzig über unsere musikalische Zusammenarbeit." so Dissard. Sprache ist überhaupt ein wichtiger Aspekt dieses Albums: "Nach "L'entredeux" wollte ich mein nächstes Album auf Englisch schreiben. Aber im Umfeld von Christians Studio in Italien und nach meiner ausgedehnten Europatour, umgeben von europäischer Kultur und Sprache, gab es für mich keine Frage, dass die Mehrzahl der Texte Französisch sein würde. Ironischerweise hat eines der intimsten Stücke - "Fugu", in dem es um Abtreibung und auch um die Beziehung zu meinem Ex-Mann geht - einen englischen Text. Früher habe ich die französische Sprache als Schutzschild benutzt, denn in meiner Wahlheimat Arizona versteht kaum jemand Französisch. Heute ist es eine bewusste ästhetische Entscheidung, auf Französisch zu singen. Obwohl ich es privat kaum noch spreche bleibt es für mich die Sprache von Kunst, Poesie und Feinfühligkeit." Nach den Sessions in Italien entstanden die Aufnahmen unter der Co-Regie von Jim Waters (Produzent von Sonic Youth und Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) live in dessen Waterworks Studio in Tucson. Die Studioband bestand aus dem Ausnahmetalent Connor Gallagher (u.a. Andrew Collberg) an der Gitarre, Pianist Sergio Mendoza (Calexico), Drummer Arthur Vint (Naïm Amor Band), Gitarrist und Sänger Brian Lopez (Calexico, Mostly Bears), Bassist Thoger Lund (Giant Sand) und viele andere Gäste aus Tucson. "Im Grunde waren wir ein Team von sechs Produzenten, von denen jeder seine eigenen Ideen eingebracht hat. Das Ganze war sehr demokratisch. Jim bekommt den Co-Produzenten-Credit, weil er die ganze Zeit geduldig mit Rat und Tat zur Seite gestanden, aber mir dabei alle Freiheiten gelassen hat. Eine traumhafte Situation für einen Produzentenneuling wie mich." Im Zentrum des Albums steht das französisch-englische Duett mit Brian Lopez "Neige Romain" in dem sie beide (in Umkehrung des Titelstücks aus dem Westernklassiker High Noon) singen: "Forsake me not, forsake me not, oh my darling. Though if you do, oh glory!, I shall be without tears." Darunter liegt ein Sample verschiedener Politiker-Statements zur Weltwirtschaftskrise, zu dem sich das Rezitat eines Gedichts von Pier Paolo Pasolini gesellt. Die Botschaft ist klar: Wenn die Welt schon verrückt spielt, dann ist auf persönlicher Ebene Härte und Pragmatismus angesagt. Die stilistischen Mittel, mit denen Dissard hier zu Werke geht, sind auf subtile Weise poetisch und erfinderisch. "Neige Romain" und das Mrs.-Robinson-Drama "Un gros chat" gehören zu den ruhigen Stücken des Albums. Daneben gibt es viele Uptempo-Songs, wie "La peau du lait" - eine Abrechnung mit dem romantischen Frankreich-Klischee - das druckvolle "L'exilé" oder die großartige Tucson-Hymne "The one and only". Hier wie auch in dem extrovertierten "Ecrivain public" wird deutlich, welch starke Spuren die zahlreichen Live-Auftritte der letzten zwei Jahre im Werk Dissards hinterlassen haben: Gereift im Umgang mit ihrer eigenen Stimme, schöpft sie aus einem größeren Repertoire an Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten und nutzt diese voll aus. Dazu kommen Chöre und Mariachi-Bläser, die explizit darauf hinweisen wo die Heimat von Marianne Dissard liegt: eine Fahrstunde entfernt von der mexikanisch-amerikanischen Grenzstadt Nogales. Jenseits dieser Grenze ist "Almas Perversas" angesiedelt, die erste Eigenkomposition Dissards: " In Almas Perversas geht es um mexikanische Porno-Comics, aber eigentlich handelt es vom Verhältnis Tucsons zu Mexiko. Wir leben in Arizona im Grenzgebiet zwischen den USA und Mexiko - das ist kein einfaches Verhältnis, denn es ist eine Art Kriegsgebiet. Mehr oder weniger sind alle meine Musiker von diesem Verhältnis geprägt und auf eine Art Mexiko-Amerikaner. Das ist mir näher als das Amerika der WASP." Dem hätte sich wohl auch Charlie Mingus angeschlossen, der in besagtem Nogales geboren wurde. Abschließend noch einmal zum Titel des Albums: "Der Titel des Albums, "L'abandon", hat zwei Bedeutungen: zum einen die negative (verlassen werden, versagt haben) zum anderen eine positive: die eines Zustands der Befreiung und des Hinter-sich-lassens mit allen sexuellen und spirituellen Untertönen. Ich habe mich eine ganze Weile vor den Aufnahmen für den Titel entschieden - als eine Art Leitlinie für die Arbeit an dem Album. Und in der Tat fühlt sich "L'abandon" nun wie eine Befreiung an. Der Titel folgt dem gleichen Prinzip wie beim Vorgänger "L'entredeux": Ich benutzte einen eigentlich negativen Begriff und wandle ihn in etwas positives, eine Stärke um." Es ist die Stärke Marianne Dissards, dies auch musikalisch hörbar zu machen. |

Novellas Progressive is playing original songs in an impressive world mix of their musical roots in Mozambique added with super funky grooves and jazzy harmonies. Wenn die Band der zwei Brüderpaare, der Johnsons (mit Bart) und der Johanssons (ohne Bart), nicht gerade ihre Villa Villekulla irgendwo im Grasland vor der Stadt behaust, trifft man sich in den Klubs und Cafés des Viertels mit Gleichgesinnten oder unternimmt anhaltende Spaziergänge mit Kinderwagen (ja, das Alter hat man jetzt) im Vitabergsparken, versucht schwadronierend und debattierend die Hunde in Zaum zu halten. Johnossi, die Shout Out Louds, Mando Diao, Bored Man Overboard, Friska Viljor, The Concretes, Dag för dag, Lykke Li, Peter Bjorn & John (...), bedenkt man wie klein Södermalm eigentlich ist, kann der Kenner skandinavischer Musikkultur ob der illustren Gesellschaft der Flaneure, die hier durch die Grünanlagen spaziert, leicht ins Staunen geraten. Man kennt sich eben. Dass an solch geweihtem Orte allerlei Musikalisches zu Stande kommt, will nicht überraschen. Nicht die Kleider - der Spaziergang macht die Leute!
WHY DAWN IS CALLED MOURNING Vielleicht hat seit den mutmaßlichen Giganten John (Flansburgh) und John (Linnell) niemand mehr so lichtreich und schwer mit Eigensinn behangen Weißbrot gebacken, wie das doppelte Doppelte Lottchen aus dem Skärgården. Neondurchtränkte Pop-Hymnen mit viel Wohlklang und wenig Trallala und ein Sänger, der sich die Seele aus dem hageren Laib singt, wie es (obwohl man mit derartigem Vergleich vorsichtig umgeht) zuletzt der junge Bowie gewagt hat. Seelenpolar als Spielball, aufgerieben in Metren und Kadenzen von symphonischer Bandbreite, durchsetzt mit Zitaten des guten Geschmacks, von McCartney bis Simon, die in einem Stakkato der Eigenheiten nie zum Eklektizismus verkommen sondern nur noch mehr Salz in der Suppe sind. Nevous Nellie sind mit dem dritten Album angekommen im Allesgeht. Für diejenigen unter euch, die auch unter Tränen ein Zwinkern übrig haben, wird „Why Dawn Is Called Mourning" auf ganz feiner Linie Zeremonie werden. |
